Tidal Generation Limited was set up in 2005 by a team that has been involved in the tidal energy industry since its inception. TGL's staff had key roles in the first successful UK tidal turbine project, led by IT Power Limited and installed in 2003.
TGL's team has extensive knowledge of the tidal stream industry, and unique hands-on experience in the design, construction, installation, operation, maintenance and testing of tidal turbines. Our experience has enabled us to develop our own competitive concepts for the turbine, installation and maintenance of deep water installations. The executive team is small, and focused on delivering our innovative, economic machine.
George Gibberd (Technical Director)
George is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with twenty years' experience in the power industry, much of it in the hydro-electric industry. After fifteen years with Atkins Consultants, George was the Engineering Manager at Marine Current Turbines, where he was responsible for the design of the Seaflow rotor system on the world's first large-scale tidal turbine. He was subsequently responsible for the engineering of a 1.2MW commercial class twin rotor tidal machine.
Jeremy Thake (Engineering Director)
Jeremy has been working in the tidal energy industry for ten years, and was Project Manager for one of the first large-scale tidal prototypes, IT Power's Seaflow turbine, which was installed in the Bristol Channel in 2003. He joined IT Power in 1998, working initially on hydropower and other renewables, as well as a variety of tidal resource and feasibility studies. In 2004 he transferred to Marine Current Turbines, which had been set up by IT Power in 2000, and continued to work on MCT's Seagen prototype, as well as managing work on site selection and resource modelling. He joined Tidal Generation in 2007. Prior to working on tidal, Jeremy had experience of engineering design and project management for a number of companies, including JCB Excavators, and worked overseas on small hydropower development.
Tania Lake (Finance Director and Company Secretary)
Tania is a Chartered Accountant. She worked in the University sector, for the Open University and UCL, before becoming the Finance Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London. Tania is also responsible for the administrative functions of the company.
Chris Huxley-Reynard (Sites Director)
Chris is an aeronautical engineer. He spent three years with MCT where he worked with George on the Seaflow turbine. Chris is one of the most experienced tidal turbine operators in the world with an in-depth understanding of the practicalities of working at sea and the implications for the design of tidal stream plant. Chris also has a strong technical background and has developed a suite of state-of-the-art computer modeling tools for our turbine rotor.
Sean Sutcliffe (Chairman)
Sean Sutcliffe has been Chairman of TGL since August 2007, and was previously on the Advisory Board, contributing extensive experience in the energy and renewables sector. He is also Chief Executive of Green Biologics, Chairman of Biofuels Corporation Trading Limited, where he was previously Chief Executive, and a Trustee of Practical Action, an international development charity. Previously Sean worked for BG Group plc for 14 years in a variety of roles spanning operations, business development and strategy, most recently as Executive Vice President with responsibility for Corporate Development and New Businesses. Sean is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with an Engineering degree from Cambridge University.
